Candy
Shaw (lead vocals) I've
loved music as long as I could remember. I had always wanted to
be in a band, but never really had the courage until I got older
and gained more self confidence. I started singing with a bunch
of close friends in a garage - just messing around.
My first band was called The Killing Pigs (because someone heard
us playing and said that's what we sounded like) we played private
parties mostly, for free of course. It was at one of those parties
that some serious musicians heard me sing. They asked me if I
would like to do some vocals on some music they were recording.
I got my first taste of the recording studio.
At that point I joined another band Seven Sisters and did several
CD's with them to promote the band and copyright material for
selling purposes. I've done background vocals for several commercial
jingles, and other artist’s recordings. But I've absolutely
had the most fun being a Sofa King. We have a great relationship
as a band and everyone has specific things they do to contribute
to us being a great team. You can call me the "Queen of the
Sofa Kings!” Although some people think I am Sofia King.

Gary
Shaw (harmonica and vocals) I'm
originally from Mississippi, and then I relocated to upstate New
York, Where I started working with bands in the late 70's. I worked
in bands called Hollywood and White Heat. After moving to Florida
in 1980 I began jamming with the Killing Pigs, Exit 147, Mark
Haney and the Buzzards and now I'm at home with the Sofa Kings.
When I'm not playing music I'm out riding my motorcycle with my
friends on some "Poker Run" or to our favorite watering
holes.
I play Lee Oskar harmonicas and others, through a Shaker or Green
Bullet microphone and a Fender tube amp.
My influences have been Muddy
Waters, The
Nighthawks, J.
Geil's Band, and Jimmy
Reed. |
Jeff
Thompson (bass guitar and vocals)
It seems I've always had the passion for Rock n' Roll - my instruments
of choice are electric, acoustic, and bass guitars.
Just as I hit my teen years, bands like Cream,
Hendrix,
Zeppelin... (You know the list) were all the rage, and are still
my biggest influences even today.
I played rhythm guitar with various Boston area garage bands through
the 70's and 80's. I moved to Ft. Myers in 1993 and have been
exposed to a lot of blues oriented players. I've found it to be
much more lucrative trying to get gigs as a bass guy. Since then
I've been laying down the groove and I enjoy it. I've had the
opportunity to be involved in some studio recordings and have
been able to write bass lines to original projects, as well as
opening for Lynard
Skynard with Mark Haney and the Buzzards during the K-Rock
Birthday Bash in November 2003.
Playing with The Sofa Kings is great. We're a great team. Though
I still love playing acoustic and electric six-string guitar,
I pride myself on being able to lay down the backbeat and just
being one of "The Kings"! |
Randy
Bailey (drummer and vocals) I have
been a drummer for over 30 years, studying percussion under such
venerable musicians as Ed
Shaughnessy (Johnny Carson's NBC Night Orchestra), Joe
Morello (The Dave Brubeck Quartet), and Carmine
Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, etc.) to name a few. Some
of my earlier bands include Hugo and The Lynoleum Tyles, The Morning
circus Band, and Red Reynolds as The Glenn Miller Orchestra. I
am also an accomplished pianist/keyboardist as well as a prolific
studio musician. My recording credits include producing over a
dozen CD's/albums featuring such renowned artists such as The
Goo Goo Dolls, Rick
James' Stone City Band, and Dr. Stone. I have also recorded
many jingles and songs for television and radio, including pieces
for The National Football League and The National Hockey League.
I was working in radio as a disc jockey and producer in western
New York until moving to sunny Florida in 1996, and joined The
Sofa Kings as their drummer at the turn of the century. |
Tom
Smith (lead guitar and vocals) I
am the lead member of the Sofa Kings, playing lead guitar. I am
a native Floridian. I've been playing guitar ever since I can
remember. My first guitar was a cheap bass guitar from Sears that
my parents bought me. I sawed the sides off so it would look like
the bass guitar from the band Rush.
I've been in many bands over the years. My first band was called
Slagheep. I've played for Mark Haney and the Buzzards, F&A,
and the Tribe. As the technical member of the band I run all the
sound equipment. As well as haul it to and from gigs in my trailer.
I've been to school for studio engineering and do a lot of recording
for other bands in my own home studio. This is also where the
Sofa Kings do their recording and practice sessions.
My influences are John
Mooney, The Black Crowes,
Led Zeppelin
and AC/DC.
I wish I could dedicate all my time to the business of music,
but at this time I have to keep my day job!
